Teacher Page

Virginia Standards of Learning (aligned to the January, 2010 Curriculum Framework)
  • ES.1b-c;f
The student will plan and conduct investigations in which technologies, including compters...and geospatial technologies, are used to collect, analyze, and report data; imagery is interpreted; current applications are
used to reinforce Earth Science concepts.
  • ES.2
The student will demonstrate an understanding of the nature of science.
  • ES.3c
The student will investigate and understand the characteristics of the sun.
  • ES.13b
The student will investigate and understand the origin and evolution fo stars...using the H-R diagram.
Time Required
  • One 90-minute block plus optional time for the Sun lecture material.
  • Web Quest can be shortened as needed.
Differentiation
  • This activity can easily be differentiated by altering teacher involvement. Less advanced students may benefit from working all tutorials as a class and/or only completing the solar storm SPOT modules. More advanced students may enjoy tackling the challenging real-time images on their own.
Implementation Notes
  • Zoo Universe does not (at the time of writing) offer class accounts. They recommend creating a new account for each computer system. The password can be the same as user name. Because I have students print out their results page, I create a new set of accounts for each class section.
