"Every time someone uses a certain type of cell phone, they are using minerals that come right out of eastern Congo. What does that do for the people...? Nothing. It helps them in no way. "

The geosciences intersect with world affairs and politics in a branch called geopolitics.

The sourcing and use of natural resources, including oil, water, and minerals, is a hot topic around the world. Minerals are valued as gemstones (diamonds, rubies, etc), and as a source of rare earth metals that are used in modern electronics.

Conflict minerals are minerals that are mined and sold in order to fund terrorism and wars. Although so-called blood diamonds, have received most of the media attention, there are dozens of conflict minerals.

Conflict minerals are the focus of new, pending legislation in the US and around the world. Your task in this webquest is to research the conflict minerals situation, and to prepare for a class model UN debate. You may use the Kimberley process as a model to follow.
